Wearing Print on Print and Working It

Stripes03One of the things I usually try to avoid is wearing print on print. My hesitation to wear this certain style is well known so much so that my FOSSIL, Dominique actually dared me to wear print on print on this occasion called FAKE IT FRIDAYS where we had to wear one particular style we’d never wear unless on a dare… this was the one chosen for me.

A big factor contributing to my reluctance to the whole print on print scheme is my tendency to see things in black and white. I like things safe, orderly and classic. Well, I did have a rocker chick phase but even then, I did not mix prints… and well that phase is a different story. However, since I have embarked on this whole self-discovery, just-say-yes and risk it journey in my life, I decided to challenge my self-imposed rules and give myself a break. Of course, I won’t go sky-diving or sign myself up for a 100mph zip line activity. The key to making changes in your life is this: baby steps. So I am raising the ordinary to the extraordinary in the mundane, everyday things in my life and that involves my fashion choices (because I love clothes, I love dressing up and it will always just be a part of me.) Hence, the subtle print on print outfit. It may seem like not a big deal to you guys but it was for me and since this is what I consider one of the first steps I am taking to breaking my own rules, it’s kind of major for me.

Be creative and mix different patterns or solid colors with one or two patterns to create an ensemble.

  • Look for an interesting pattern to begin with.
  • The pattern should be such that it flatters your body shape.
  • Wear bold patterns, mix complementary color palettes, with matching accessories.
  • Wear printed denims for the festive look.
  • If you are mixing clashing patterns, look for the same fabric.
  • Look for a common color which repeats in different patterns.
  • Repeat the lines and it creates an interesting mix n’ match outfit.
  • Wear an accessory that will bring together the whole outfit. The scarf, belt, shoes, can bring the outfit together.
  • Use the patterns in a scale. Mix the smaller prints with a larger print to create an interesting outfit with repetition.
  • You can use a floral print tops with a straight skirt in solid colors.
  • Use a floral scarf on a leopard print top.
  • Use a mix of prints in black & white.
  • Use color blocking with mixed prints.
