Wish? DO!

Wish01 “Many people think they want things, but they don’t really have the strength, the discipline. They are weak. I believe that you get what you want if you want it badly enough.”

I rarely wear statement shirts…or in this case…sweaters. It was a big trend that started in the late 2000s and continues to carry on until now and there’s just something so powerful in wearing your thoughts out and parading it for the world to see that makes me quite hesitant. I prefer to go for the basic top or a nicely printed blouse. However, there are exceptions and when I do wear a statement anything, I make sure I am fully committed to the message and that I believe in it completely. The written word is just so powerful and there’s already so much pressure on making statements and not being able to take them back once said… what more when it’s a giant sign for everyone to see on your torso? It just requires a lot of commitment to it and I don’t want to be responsible for people misinterpreting what I mean… especially since social influence is something we have to take very seriously. I know what you’re thinking: I am probably overthinking it…and the truth is: I really do put a lot of thought when it comes to my actions especially since I know that we are all accountable for what we say/do/post. I prefer to represent myself in a way that would have a positive impact on people. So it was a well thought-of decision to don this white lace sweater with the words WISH (cancelled out) and DO put in as replacement.
I don’t want to sound preachy or holier-than-thou because I know I do have my share of mistakes and misconceptions. I once thought I was entitled to certain things and I had certain expectations on how life is supposed to be. In a way, I thought that if I could dream it, things were supposed to be handed to me on a silver platter. How absolutely wrong I was! Having dreams and goals is something we are all entitled to and most of the time, I encourage people and my scholars especially to aspire to be extraordinary and to dream big. Aspirations are, after all, limitless. However, I do have to stress that it doesn’t end in just wanting something. The more crucial and important part of everything is: following through and actually doing things that would lead you closer and closer to attaining your dream. Unfortunately, we are somehow programmed to think that we deserve certain things by virtue of existing. Newsflash: we don’t. To deserve something is the result of having done something worthy like working hard for it.
The general consensus is that we all think we’re destined for greatness in some way. I think we are all given the chance to take a shot at greatness but it’s not something that will just happen magically… you have to actually do something to attain it. Simply put: you’ve got to hustle.
I’d like to think my motivation for wearing this sweater and sharing it to all of you now in this entry is my own way of giving tough love. The truth is: there is no white knight coming in to save you. Neither is that meet cute, that spontaneous promotion, or that perfect, serendipitous miracle. There is no intervention on its way that’s going to suddenly change everything you hate about your life. Not unless you make one happen yourself.
Even exemplary people begin by being average: whatever your natural talents, you’re going to have to absolutely work your butt off to get recognized, just like everybody else. By acknowledging that you’re going to have to work for what you want, you are already miles ahead of many unfortunate millennials. Provided you, you know, start working for it.
Realizing that our lives will essentially stay the same forever unless we change something is a very empowering notion. Once we stop counting on daydreams and start counting on ourselves, it is incredible how much power we discover within our own hands. So stop wishing. Start doing.
